I have compiled a list of phrasal verbs all about life.
Look at the graphics below, and let’s think about each phrasal verb.
COME DOWN WITH
TO START TO SUFFER FROM A MILD ILLNESS.
I think I’m coming down with a cold.
I think I’m coming down with something.
CHECK UP ON
TO ASK A FRIEND IF THEY’RE FEELING OKAY TODAY.
Just wanted to check up on you.
Are you feeling any better?
To check up on someone is to investigate their work. Your boss might check up on your work to see if it’s done properly. But you can also check up on a friend or a family member to see if they’re feeling well. So, in casual contexts, you can use this phrase when you want to ask a friend if they’re feeling okay.
FIGURE OUT
TO FIND A SOLUTION OR UNDERSTAND SOMETHING.
I can’t figure out why he’s being acting so strange.
This Rubik’s Cube, I can’t figure it out!
Figure out + how → did you figure out how to get your money back?
Figure out + what → I can’t figure out what’s wrong with my computer.
Figure out + a way → we have to figure out a way to stop him.
PUT UP WITH
TO TOLERATE SOMETHING, EVEN THOUGH YOU DON’T LIKE IT.
Putting up with this behaviour is not part of the job!
I can’t put up with this nonsense.
Put up with + nonsense → why do you put up with this nonsense?
Put up with + bullshit → I don’t have the patience to put up with this bullshit.
Put up with + behavior → putting up with this behavior is not part of the job!
Your task is to come up with a short sentence describing your day, maybe in the office or something you did or a place where you went.
You need to use at least 2 phrasal verbs from the list and can’t mention anything specific about what you did.
I went for lunch today at 13pm, I had to put up with a huge queue at the coffee shop.
It was raining, and I think I am coming down with a cold.
